Sculpture – Wood Carvings

Goto Naoshi was the second son of Goto Sadayuki, a Meiji-era sculptor from a retainer of a samurai family of the feudal Kii domain. After studying at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, Naoshi made many wooden sculptures based on Noh plays using traditional carving techniques. This work is a statue of the former shite in white clappers appearing at Dojoji Temple in Kii Province in the Noh play Dojoji Temple. The performer's sense of urgency is reflected in his standing posture and the way he gazes blankly at one point from his Omi-onna mask.(「Wakyama and the Imperial Family」2021)
