Prime Minister Ito Hirobumi was ordered by Emperor Meiji to make an inspection tour of the Kyushu and Okinawa regions in 1887. Yamamoto Hosui(1850-1906), who had just returned to Japan in the same year, after studying in France, was requested by Ito to depict the natural features of Kyushu and Okinawa, which Hosui presented to Emperor Meiji.(「Passing Down Masterpieces」2020)
