Awarded the highest prize at the exhibition for this work purchased by the Imperial Household Ministry, Kojima received an allowance to study in Europe from his sponsor, a businessman named Ohara Magozaburo, as a result. In the composition making full usage of his favorite soft backlight effect, he depicted an ill orphan and his anxious friends surrounding him with a warm touch.
