Bamboo and Pigeons
- Meiji period, 1882
- ink on paper
- hanging scroll
Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings
Compared to the bamboo or grasses painted by stylized brushwork of the Kano School, three pigeons are depicted realistically in details reflecting elaborate observation of nature. Also, by the ingenious variations of ink shades, a moderate sense of distance between each motif is painted successfully, attempting to produce modern perspective space. It is a charming work among the early Meiji paintings by Hashimoto who was strongly interested in western realistic painting style from his earlier stage. (「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
