Flowers and Birds
Although influence of Chinese painting of the Hokushu School is strong in the depiction of the rock' s surface, peacocks and flowers are depicted elaborately and realistically based on accurate observation of nature. Also, each small bird is depicted with rich expression. Because of the gorgeous colors, each object has rich material feeling, creating a sense of depth and expanse of space. It is his representative work with refinement in a calm atmosphere, unique to Sugitani whose specialty was flower and bird painting.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
