Ryukyu-style lacquered stationery box and ink-stone box

A white mitsudae ( litharge ) coating is applied to the surface of both the calligraphy paper box and the writing box, and a pavilion and human figures either farming, fishing playing the game of Igo, etc., are the themes depicted in hakue ( gold fail picture ) technique. Butterflies, bamboo and treasures on the side of the lid of the calligraphy paper box and peach blossom branches on the side of the writing box are all auspicious designs. It is known was a Ryukyuan piece.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
