Hitomaro Gazing on Scenery at Akashi

Hitomaro Gazing on Scenery at Akashi

This is a depiction of the scene when Kakinomoto Hitomaro composed the famous waka poem of Akashi-no-ura, with the calm harmony of nature and man lyrically expressed by traditional Yamatoe technique. Judging from the signature and seal, it can be considered to be dated between 1654 when Mitsuoki became the chief court painter, to 1681 when he was conferred as Hokkyo.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
