Massive Rock

Massive Rock

The representative piece of Nakamura Tsune (1887-1924)'s early work, that received a prize at the 3rd Bunten (art exhibition sponsored by the Ministry of Education) in 1909. It is a scene of the shore at Shirahama, Chiba Prefecture, that the painter visited on a sketching trip in the summer of this year. The mass of the rock lumps and the solid texture is skillfully depicted, and the strong brushwork shows the beginning of the individuality and vigor of this young painter at 22 years of age. Since Nakamura won a prize with this piece, he became a famous painter actively exhibiting at Bunten. It was a gift from the Mito Tokugawa family in 1929.(「Passing Art works to the Future」2013)
