Tieling in Manchuria

Tieling in Manchuria

This is one of the seven oil painting landscapes presented to celebrate the coronation of Crown Prince Hirohito (Emperor Showa) by civil officials in 1916. Not only Fuji and the Seto Inland Sea, but scenic spots in territories known as the outer regions were also selected for the paintings. The artist of this painting, Yamamoto Morinosuke, was in charge of the landscapes of one of the outer regions: Manchuria. He used the Pleinarist painting techniques he had learned from Kuroda Seiki (1866–1924), in which bright colors are applied with a fine touch to beautifully depict the light and air of Manchuria in a refreshing way.(「The Modern Age」2015)
