Screen of a Flower Basket

Screen of a Flower Basket

Screens that were placed in front of fireplaces in the Kasumigaseki Imperial Villa. The Kasumigaseki Imperial Villa was constructed in 1884 as the residence of Prince Arisugawa, which became an Imperial Villa in 1904. These screens were probably created as decorative furnishings, soon after the completion of the building. The depictions show influence of Chinese paintings of hand broken branches, instead of entire flowers, plants or flowering trees. The Meiji Palace and Imperial Villas were decorated with this kind of brilliant painting of flowers and plants.(「Flowers of Felicitations」2019)
