Carp Under a Pine Branch

Carp Under a Pine Branch

This work depicts four carps resting under a pine branch. The artist is Kawabata Ryushi, a Nihonga (Japanese-style) painter born in Wakayama. After being active at the Japan Art Institute, he established the Japanese painting group Seiryusha, and breathed new life into the art world with his bold style and advocating for large-scale paintings. Carps were his favorite painting subject, and his characteristics can be seen in his accurate depiction of his subject and realistic style. Ryushi was commissioned with this work by the Imperial Household in 1938.(「Wakyama and the Imperial Family」2021)
