Peony and Peacock

Peony and Peacock

The peacock is one of the favorite motifs of Maruyama Okyo ( 1733-95 ), who created many works of this theme, and this one is the representative of them. The minute depiction shows the characteristics of Okyo' s painting style, known as the originator of the Shasei ( Naturalism ) School. It was painted when he was forty-four years old.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
