Mikawachi ware, pair of flower vases with design of chrysanthemums, dragons and phoenixes
This pair was created by Nakazato Mimata and Imamura Katsujiro of the Mikawachi ware ceramists in Sasebo city, Nagasaki Prefecture, using the designs of an ancient Goryeo vase passed down in the Matsuura family, the former feudal lord. The designs are in relief, made with a technique unique of Mikawachi called okiage, in which the base clay is applied with a brush in layers. It was a gift from Sasebo city when Emperor Taisho visited Nagasaki Prefecture in 1918.(「Reviewing Modern Ceramics 」2021)
