In 1887, Prince Komatsu Akihito visited Sultan Abdul Hamid II of the Ottoman Empire . In return the Emperor Meiji received this velvet tablecloth along with an official letter, medals, and tobacco utensils. The chrysanthemum crest appears to be a nod to the Imperial Coat of Arms and is placed in the center. The floral arabesque design is embroidered using several types of gold thread and sequins.
