Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings

This is considered to be one of the trousseau of Fuhime who married Prince Toshitada of the Hachijonomiya family. Fuhime was the daughter of Maeda Toshitsune, the lord of Kaga, and married the Prince as the adopted daughter of the Tokugawa Shogun. This is why it was painted by Kano Tan' yu ( 1602-74, Shogunate painter ), and hollyhock and peach branch designs in embroidery around the screens, cloisonne metal fittings, and metal fittings on the box are designed with hollyhocks (crest of the Tokugawa family ). It can be said to be representative work of Tanyu, as a superior Yamatoe painting made at a rather early stage when Tanyu was at the age 40 to 41, with scenes depicted from all of the 54 chapters of the Tale of Genji. It was formerly owned by the Prince Katsura Family.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
