Mt. Bandai erupted on July 15th, 1888, which became a disaster causing the death of more than 470 people. Yamamoto Hosui (1850-1906) was commissioned by a newspaper company to sketch the site, and completed this painting based on those sketches. He presented it to Emperor Meiji through Prime Minister Ito Hirobumi.(「Passing Down Masterpieces」2020)
