Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana)

Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana)

This hanging scroll depicts Dainichi Nyorai, the principle deity of the Koyasan Konpon Daito Pagoda, appearing at the center of the Womb World Mandala with a meditation mudra (hand gesture). The artist Kimura Buzan painted it in conjunction with the reconstruction of the pagoda in commemoration of the 1,000th anniversary of Kukai (also known as Kobo Daishi). After the Eye-Opening Ceremony at Kongobuji Temple, it was handed to the Imperial Family. Buzan painted the murals of the Main Hall of Kongobuji Temple and many other Buddhist paintings. This painting expertly demonstrates his expertise in traditional Buddhist painting techniques.(「Wakyama and the Imperial Family」2021)
