Staff of a Buddhist Monk Turning Into a Dragon
Staff of a Buddhist Monk Turning Into a Dragon
This sculpture is based on a legend that Dogen (1200–53), founder of the Soto sect of Buddhism, encountered a tiger and threw his staff at it, which transformed into a dragon and repelled the tiger. The work captures the dynamic figure of the tiger and the exact moment of the staff changing into a dragon. The artist, Yamazaki Choun, was born in Fukuoka Prefecture.(「The Imperial Family and Miyazaki Prefecture」2021)
