Pair of Bantams

Takamura Koun(1852-1934), a sculptor representative of the modern period who pursued realistic expressions of animals, and other images, using traditional wood carving skills that he studied under a Buddhist image sculptor. The bantam rooster was exhibited in the 1889 Nihon Bijutsu Kyokai (Japan Art Association) Exhibition, where it was purchased by Emperor Meiji. The bantam hen was created after this to join the rooster.(「Passing Down Masterpieces」2020)
