Plants and Insects

Shen Quan was a bird and flower painter of the Qing Dynasty and was invited to Japan by the Edo Shogunate, arriving in Nagasaki in December 1731. During the short period until he returned to China in September 1733, he influenced Japanese painters greatly. Completed with soft brushwork and light coloring, this is interesting work conscious of the tradition of minute sketch painting grasses and insects since the Sung Dynasty.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
