Scene of Erupting Volcano
This is one of a series of famous place paintings depicting the Island of Sakurajima. Although it is a simple painting style unique to an amateur painter who learned the oil painting by himself, details of each object are surprisingly elaborate, showing deep attachment to realistic expression typical of early Meiji oil painters. It is interesting that the rectangular shape in the style of a wooden panel with openwork carving above paper sliding doors shows the traditional sense of beauty since modern times.（「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003）
