Sugawara no Michizane composing a poem admiring plums is the theme of this picture. Each object such as the clothes of Michizane, and the attending child or their belongings do not necessarily follow authentic historical investigation, attempting expression by realistic manner even in detail. However, looks of the figures are idealized, and plums in background show stylized plane form.
