Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings

Ogri Sotan was a painter who served the Shogunate, but there are no paintings that can be positively attributed to him at the present. This painting has Sotan's seal and an appraisal written in the Edo period, but there is a trace of a different seal above Sotan's on the right scroll, and the paintings have been trimmed, so the attribution cannot be absolutely trusted. However, it is a superior flower and bird painting showing fine realism, similar to Chinese Sung and Yuan Dynasty painting of the same theme.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
