Sculpture – Wood Carvings

This is a performing monkey with formal headwear for court nobles and a vest mimicking the Sanbaso dance of Noh play, with a bell in its right hand and strips of white paper hung from branches used in Shinto rituals on its left shoulder, which acted in a performance celebrating the New Year. It depicts a moment of a monkey performing fervently removed from its rope. In contrast with its comical movement, the nihilistic look on its face appeals Takamura' s sharp observing eyes and certain technique.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
