Crafts – Ceramics

A pair of vases depicting elaborate flowers and birds with polychrome glaze, by Kanzan Denshichi, who is the first ceramicist in Kyoto to specialize in porcelain wares. On the lid of the white porcelain vessels, small birds fly, and flowers of the four seasons such as plum(Japanese apricot) blossoms, lilies, fringed pinks, and chrysanthemums bloom, making it a gorgeous piece. The set is charming with its mixture of Japanese, Chinese and Western elements which is unique to the early Meiji period. These elements are namely, exquisite depiction typical of the Maruyama Shijo schools, western style refinement cultivated by tableware production, and dense polychrome painting seen in Chinese Qing Dynasty ceramics.(「Flowers of Felicitations」2019)
