Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings

Horai-san (Mount Penglai in Chinese) is a legendary mountain from ancient Chinese mythology. Located in the middle of the sea, the mountain is believed to be a paradise inhabited by immortals. Various Japanese painters have painted this auspicious subject. This set of hanging scrolls is a collaborative effort by two leading artists of the Japan Art Institute. The right one was painted by Shimomura Kanzan, and the left one by Yokoyama Taikan. The set was a gift commissioned to celebrate the marriage of the Crown Prince (the future Taisho Emperor) from the noblemen Takatsukasa Hiromichi and Nijo Motohiro in 1903.(「Wakyama and the Imperial Family」2021)
