Sculpture – Ivory Carvings

In a trend in where Rodin style plastic expression was considered the quintessence of sculpture, ivory carved articles ceased to be regarded as art works, and were considered as articles cherished only by a few in Japan from the late Meiji to the early Showa era. Within this current, lifelike fruit, vegetable and flower articles reached the sublime in coloring technique and realistic depiction. This is an excellent piece of work in the highest techniques of Ando, the representative person of this field.
