The Tale of Priest Saigyo
- Edo period, 18th century
- color on paper
- set of four handscrolls
Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings
The Biography of Priest Saigyo, about the life of Saigyo ( 1118-90 ), a poet of late Heian period with his conducts and poems, was depicted in pictorial scrolls soon after it was written in the Kamakura Period. Perhaps because of his charm, a large number of both storybooks and pictorial scrolls were made since, and this is a copy by Ogata Korin ( 1658-1716), of the one Tawaraya Sotatsu copied from that in the Imperial Palace by Kaida Uneme no Suke Sukeyasu. In spite of being a copy, it shows Korin' s own interpretation in colors, etc.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
