- Taisho period, 1924

- hanging scroll
Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings
This is Kawai's representative work of the Taisho era, depicting a moment of the early summer sun shining through the clouds after long rain. Although using the Shijo School style for the background trees, and the Kano School style for the rock surface in the foreground, spatial expression close to western naturalism is expressed in a whole. This realistic depiction of landscape formed a standard of landscape expression in the Teikoku Bijutsuin Tenrankai Nihonga from then on.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
