Landscapes of Spring and Autumn
- Meiji period, 1901
- color on silk
Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings
Although this pair of scrolls was ordered to the Imperial Household Ministry almost at the same time as the ‛ Landscapes of Summer and Winter ' ( dated about 1896 ) in our collection, the two are utterly different works with different styles. In contrast to ‛ Landscapes of Summer and Winter ' expressed powerfully by the old style brushwork of the Kano School painting with his arm raised, this works depicts calm scenes full of poetic sentiment of spring and autumn with refined brushwork. It also attempts spatial expression of modern western painting with aerial perspective.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
