  • Heian period, 12th century
  • hanging scroll

Calligraphy – Japanese Calligraphy

One of the few existing letters written by Taira no Shigemori ( 1138-79 ), son of Kiyomori. A bit of the last part is lost, but the addressee and the sender are both written, and Shigemori's signature can be confirmed. It is written in neat gyosho (semi-cursive ) characters, which show Shigemori's personality.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
