Chrysanthemums
- Edo period, 17th century
- pair of six folding screens
Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings
Because Ikoma Toju ( 1626-1702 ) from Hagi, was sent to Kyoto as a vassal of Takeko, the sister of feudal lord Mori Tsunahiro when she married into the Takatsukasa family, it is assumed that he had some relation with the court. This front side of this screen has various chrysanthemums with a bamboo gate and dragonflies on gold ground. The reverse side is a depiction of chrysanthemums and autumn grasses on paper, showing a refined quiet taste compared with the front side. It is considered as one of Toju' s representative pieces.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
