Captain Higuchi Embracing a Child
- Meiji period, 1895
- oil on canvas
Paintings – Oil Paintings
Asai visited China in the Sino-Japanese War in 1894, and left many sketches of various events at various places he experienced accompanying the army. This is one of the oil paintings depicting a scene then. With a calm tone of colors based on dark brown perhaps influenced by his teacher Antonio Fontanesi, an Italian painter, the scene of the Japanese captain saving a Chinese child is depicted by serene touch without special feeling.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
